Privacy Policy

Purrla LLC (“Purrla”, “we”) makes the Purrla camera and the Purrla mobile app. This policy explains what the app and the cameras collect, why, who else touches it, how long we keep it, and how to get rid of it. It covers the Purrla app, the cameras, and this website.
The short version. Purrla cameras record video and audio inside your home, and that footage is the most sensitive thing we hold. We store it so you can watch it, we use frames from it to improve the models that spot and identify cats, and we delete it on a schedule. We do not sell your data, we do not advertise, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or sites. You can delete your account, and everything in it, from inside the app.
What we collect
Your account
Your email address, your first and last name, and a password. The password is stored only as a hash by our authentication provider, and we never see it.
Your cats
A name, plus anything else you choose to add: breed, birthday, sex, colours, coat patterns, medical conditions, notes, and a photo. The app reads only the image you pick, and asks for photo library access for this and for attaching a screenshot to a support request.
Recordings from your camera
Video and audio recorded by your Purrla cameras, together with the time and length of each recording. Anything within range of a camera is captured. That can include people, other pets and conversation, so place your cameras accordingly and tell anyone else in the home that they are there.
Events, notes and stars
Events created automatically when a camera detects a cat, and events you log yourself: vomiting, bathroom events, respiratory symptoms, behavior changes, medication and weight. Both kinds carry any notes you write and any items you star. Taken together this is a health record for your cat, and we treat it as one.
Camera and connection data
Each camera’s identifier and name, its firmware version, and the diagnostics it reports: connection logs, battery readings, restarts, sensor readings and software update status.
Like any internet service, our servers, our crash reporter and this website record the IP address a request came from. We use it to keep the service running and secure, not to work out where you live.
During setup the app talks to the camera over Bluetooth to hand it your Wi-Fi network name and password. Those credentials travel from your phone straight to the camera. They are never sent to us and we never store them.
Notifications and time zone
If you turn on notifications, we store the push token your phone issues and your device’s time zone, so alerts arrive and show the right local time. Notifications are optional and the rest of the app works without them.
Diagnostics and crash reports
The app sends crash reports and performance traces to a crash reporting service so we can fix what breaks. These reports are tagged with your email address, which means our crash data is linked to your identity rather than anonymous. They contain technical detail about the app, not your recordings.
Support requests
When you use “Report an Issue” we receive what you wrote, any screenshot you attach, and the build and device details the form shows you before you send: app version, build number, update ID, release channel, platform, OS version, device model and time zone. Your email address and account ID are added from your signed-in session.
This website
purrlapet.com uses an analytics service to count visits and see which pages people read. It is not connected to your Purrla account.
How we use it
- To run the service: storing your recordings, showing your events, keeping your cameras working.
- To send the notifications you asked for.
- To answer your support requests.
- To fix crashes and performance problems.
- To improve the models that find cats in video and tell your cats apart, as described below.
Training our models
Purrla decides on its own when a cat is in the frame, and can learn to tell your cats apart. Both of those rest on machine-learning models, and those models are trained on frames drawn from recordings made by Purrla cameras, including yours. When you label which cat is in a video, that label is used as training data too.
Training frames are held separately from the recording they came from and are stripped of any link to you or your camera. They are not published and they are not sold. If this is not something you want your footage used for, please email us at meow@purrlapet.com.
Who else handles your data
We use a small number of service providers, and only to run Purrla. They fall into these categories:
- Cloud hosting and storage, for the database, your recordings and your sign-in.
- Push notification delivery, to get alerts to your phone.
- Crash and performance reporting, so we can fix what breaks.
- Customer support tools, for the tickets you open with us.
- Email delivery, for account emails such as confirmation and password reset codes.
- Server monitoring, which records account and camera identifiers so we can keep the service running. It does not receive your recordings.
- Website analytics, for purrlapet.com only.
These providers act on our instructions and may only use your data to provide their service to us.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for advertising. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising or tracking identifiers. We may disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety.
How long we keep it
- Recordings are deleted automatically once they reach the retention period shown in the app, currently 21 days.
- Camera logs and battery readings are deleted after 30 days.
- Everything else, meaning your account, cats, events and notes, is kept until you delete it or delete your account.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Account and tap Delete account. You will be asked for your password, because deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. There is no waiting period and nothing to email us for.
Deleting your account removes:
- your recordings, and the video and audio files behind them;
- your events, notes and stars;
- your cats and their photos;
- your cameras and their diagnostics, which releases the hardware to be set up again;
- your profile, push token and time zone;
- your sign-in itself.
One thing survives, without your name on it. Frames already drawn into a training set stay, because removing them would damage a model built from many people’s footage. Those frames keep no link to you: the account, the camera and every remaining file reference are stripped, leaving only the frame and the time it was taken. Everything else goes.
Your choices
- Notifications can be turned on or off at any time in your phone’s Settings.
- Photo library access is only needed to pick a cat photo or attach a screenshot, and can be revoked in your phone’s Settings.
- Your data can be deleted from the app, as above. If you would like a copy of it, or want a specific recording deleted early, email us.
Depending on where you live you may have additional rights over your personal data: to access it, correct it, or have it deleted. Email us and we will help.
Security
Traffic between the app, the cameras and our servers is encrypted in transit. Recordings and events are protected at the database level so that an account can only reach its own, and access to production systems is limited to the people who need it.
One exception is worth knowing about: the Bluetooth step during camera setup is a direct, short-range link between your phone and the camera in front of you, and it is not itself encrypted. Your Wi-Fi password goes from your phone to that camera and nowhere else, but set a camera up somewhere you trust rather than in a shared or public space.
Children
Purrla is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, or under the minimum age where you live if it is higher. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and we will tell you in the app if the change is a significant one.
